Palma de Maiorca

@albertobelluschi
The Balearics have been inhabited since ancient times. The Romans, led by the consul Quinto Cecilio Metello, after having conquered the Balearic Islands in 123 BC, founded the colony of Palma, perhaps on a previous Talaotic settlement. The city, which they named Palma, in honor of the famous Palma Picena, soon became the hub of commercial traffic with the cities of the western Mediterranean. The Romans, after ups and downs, were followed first by the vandals and then by the Byzantines. Little is known about this period even though mosaics that were previously found in an early Christian church are preserved in the Cathedral.
