The city of Washington coincides territorially and politically with the District of Columbia, of which it is an integral part . In fact, while the district originally included the counties of Washington (donated by the state of Maryland) and Alexandria (donated by the state of Virginia), following a referendum in 1846 the latter returned to the state of Virginia and changed its name to Arlington County.
