The capital Kathmandu, located at about 1 350 m above sea level, has a population of 850 000 inhabitants and about 1 500 000 in the entire metropolitan area comprising several cities and villages including Lalitpur and Bhaktapur, extended in the so-called Kathmandu Valley, corresponding to the high basin of the Bagmati river; the city of Pokhara, on the other hand, located in the central region at the foot of the Annapurna massif, with its 200,000 inhabitants (about 300,000 in the metropolitan area) is the second largest urban agglomeration in Nepal and precedes a few other cities that exceed 100,000 inhabitants (Dharan, Hetauda, ​​Butawal, Biratnagar and Birganj).
