It is an important cultural, political and commercial hub and incorporates two other towns, Bad Godesberg and Beuel, with which it forms a single agglomeration. It occupies the 19th place in the ranking of the most populous cities in Germany.
Since 1994 Bonn has been the only German city to boast the title of Bundesstadt (federal city), which indicates its role as a former seat of government.
