When sculpture can merge with Annita Mechelli’s painting

Annita Mechelli was born in Umbria in December 1931, moving almost immediately to Rome. From her earliest years she cultivated the work of materials and the search for forms: as she herself recalls, her first “exhibition” took place at the nuns’, at the age of five.
Then, after the war, Annita Mechelli, studying the visual arts at the Academy of Fine Arts, began a memorable acquaintance with the creative Rome of the 50s, meeting artists, poets and writers between Via Margutta, the Caffè Greco and the avant-garde of the time.

In this period Annita exhibited in several group exhibitions, especially related to the Roman environment. In the same years he engaged in the activity of interior design and decoration. The most consolidated artistic bond was with the sculptor Pericle Fazzini, whose studio Annita frequented and developed the figurative legacy in an original way.

From these experiences, therefore, in the following years, the artist’s creative activity descended, dedicated especially to sculptural work, followed and curated by Annita in each work for each of its phases of development and processing, and which thus looms as her main and privileged space of action.
In the early 1970s, Annita Mechelli began a series of solo exhibitions – about 300 – that have lasted at intervals for several years until today.

From this same period, alongside the sculptural one, he also began a pictorial path, which in turn matured in the following decades, especially in more recent years.
From 1990 onwards, several important milestones marked his career, also through significant works for public commissions and social value, as was the case with the opera Pace negli stadi in 1990, with Il dono della rinascita for AVIS in 2006, or again with the work for the new Port of Rome in Ostia, in 2012, and various other civic monuments scattered throughout Italy.
Annita Mechelli, who from 1975 onwards has received multiple awards for her artistic work, has also been cultivating poetic writing for many years, as well as the drawing and workmanship of art jewels, thus outlining in herself a plausible complete profile of an artist.

The sculptor’s personality is united by the great desire to break with the old traditions and the old rules of art, in a constant search for new ways to express her art.
Sculptures destined to be invested with enormous popularity, in which the artist harmonized form, color and a real movement, conceiving the whole as a “universe”, in which “each element can move, move oscillate back and forth in a changing relationship with each of the elements”

The heaviness of Annita Mechelli’s life is challenged by the sculptor who soars heavy and light masses towards the sky, towards a spatial and sensory universe that cannot be circumscribed, not measured. Just as unmeasurable is the speed that projects, with lightning-fast paths, unconventional materials in asymmetrical curved lines. Curves that constitute innumerable variations of grace and lightness that rotate, twist and contract one inside the other, for the sole pleasure of affirming their existence.

No hidden meaning is to be found in those lines, empty or full, if not a reminder of our perceptive sensitivity, which in that refined simplicity of art educates the visitor to the observation and knowledge of forms that, in an unpredictable and bizarre way, occupy airy spaces and volumes.
But Annita Mechelli is also a highly appreciated painter.
