WE ARE IN TROINA, IN THE PROVINCE OF ENNA, WHERE A FOREST THAT HAS BEEN IN THE MAFIA’S HAND FOR YEARS HAS BEEN RETURNED TO THE COMMUNITY AND NOW PROVIDES WORK TO YOUNG PEOPLE

The Troina wood is in the Nebrodi national park a green paradise made up of beech and Turkey oaks, with paths still used today for transhumance, 4200 hectares of municipal park that over the years had been taken away from the municipality by some mafia families who on those lands they had created their businesses illegally using the funds and incentives of the European Union decreed for agriculture.

The battle to return those 4000 hectares of forest to the community began in 2013 and without the support and persistence of the local youth, this fight would not have been plausible.

So after years of battles, little by little, plot after plot, the young people of Troina have taken back their wood and have routed their projects right inside this green area, going in the direction of the meaning of the territory, of legality and of the formation of local activities. .

Thus were born several projects such as the Silvo-Pastorale company which manages the breeding of 115 donkeys, 18 horses, and employs many young people from the area. The farm produces soaps, face creams, but also very popular sausages such as mortadella and donkey salami, the company is supported and is part of the farm network and is supporting the “Legality of Race” project in which they work. 8 boys who take care of animals and who want to protect protected species such as the Ragusan donkey and the Sanfratellano horse.

Then a project that focuses on wood and the extraction of resources, which involves cutting turkey oak and beech trees to be changed into pellets for sale.

So many opportunities that the willing local workers are making use of, for all of them, as for their mayor, the forest represents a place of the heart and there is a link between the population and their forest, which can hardly be severed.
